Overview
An engineering and manufacturing firm for the rail industry designs test and diagnostic systems. Their products are used in a variety of test system integrations including those for motors, transformers, and compressors. The target customers for this firm range from public transportation integrators to municipalities to global rail technology providers. Traditionally, the company has used a variety of standard PCs combined with a series of I/O modules for monitoring and control within their diagnostic systems. One vendor’s PCs experienced repeated field failures when conditions were modified to match the likely environment of deployed motors and compressors. Another vendor’s solutions were too expensive for mass deployment.

The Solution
The company contracted Sealevel to recommend a solution that addressed the challenges they faced with the PCs supplied by other vendors. After reviewing the technical specifications and environmental requirements, the Sealevel team recommended the Flexio Fanless Industrial Embedded Computer. From the family of Flexio computers, they identified the Flexio with an Intel® Core™ processor, 8 analog inputs, 2 optically isolated dry contact inputs, and 2 solid-state relay outputs as the best possible solution for the customer. This mix of I/O enables the customer to monitor various locomotive functions and verify performance. In addition to the I/O needs, the Flexio also addressed the requirement for an affordable, American-made computing system with long-term availability. As an added benefit, the Flexio computers are fanless for reduced service needs and longer guaranteed performance.
