Sealevel Introduces Remote Monitoring Using a Web Browser
February 14, 2014Your smartphone just got smarter. Sealevel Systems, Inc. has developed a way for you to remotely monitor almost any lab or industrial process anywhere you can access the Internet. Using the browser on your smartphone, tablet or laptop, you can log into your work or home network and monitor ongoing processes ― a production line or security system, for example.
Nearly all large enterprises already use some form of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system. Modern, networked SCADA systems use sensors and remote terminal units connected to a central network. Employees can log into the network to monitor and control various systems based on pre-established access rights.
The value of wireless connectivity for business productivity is clear. Many businesses now offer their employees 24/7 remote access to their networks; however, some small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) lack the IT resources and budget to allow this.
Sealevel’s new eI/O device and wireless access point (WAP) technology brings the benefits and functionality of SCADA to small- and medium-sized businesses. Using an eI/O module together with a WAP allows SMB owners and employees to perform remote monitoring and controlling without an expensive SCADA system. They can connect directly to Sealevel’s eI/O adapter through a WAP using a smartphone or any other device enabling Internet access. The need for cumbersome power cables is also eliminated, because Sealevel’s eI/O adapters function as convenient Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) devices.
Receive text or email alarms if problems develop
eI/O adapters enable rapid response to conditions in the field. Businesses that invest in sensor systems and the requisite software can set up alarm notifications for critical processes. The alarm system can send you a text or email any time specific process parameters are triggered. Say, for example, a cooling pump in a multi-stage chemical production process fails. A sensor notices the drop in pressure and alerts the eI/O device with WAP, making the information available to the host for immediate action. Being constantly aware of your system’s status can help eliminate unpredicted downtime, saving time and money.
Sealevel eI/O adapters can accept input from almost any kind of sensor, including accelerometers, flow meters, photocells, strain gauges and thermistors. When the sensor reports an out-of-parameter condition to the eI/O device, appropriate action can be taken.
Consumer applications
Sealevel’s eI/O devices also have consumer applications. A non-exhaustive list of applications includes remotely controlling your home climate and appliances, opening your garage or controlling a webcam. A growing number of modern appliances and electronic devices will interface with an eI/O adapter, and adding a WAP means they can be controlled from whatever Internet browser you have handy.
