High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC) takes Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC) one step further.
HDLC defines the content of the control byte, allowing the transmitter to send control type messages to the receiver, and the receiver to know exactly what to do with those messages.
SDLC defines the format of the frame, HDLC defines the content of the data portion of that frame.
